Diagnostics, Inspections, and Common Problems
I have a check engine light on. How much do you charge just to look at it and my car?
ABSOLUTELY NO CHARGE! At West End Auto Works, we start with a diagnostic pre-scan so you don’t waste money guessing at parts. The ultimate cost depends on the complexity of the issue and any tests required, but we always explain the price upfront and get your approval in writing before doing paid diagnostic and/or repair work. You’ll get a clear digital report (DVI) with what we found, and our service advisors will guide you through what’s urgent and what can wait so you can make an informed decision.
I need you to check out my car fast. How long does that take?
In many cases, we can perform an initial inspection or diagnostic the same day, especially for drivability or safety-related issues. The exact time depends on how complex the problem is and how busy the shop is when you arrive. If you’re on a tight schedule, let us know when you call; we’ll do our best to plan around your timing and offer shuttle or rideshare options if available.
My car died. Can you fix electrical and battery issues?
We handle battery, starting, charging, and many other electrical issues in-house. Our technicians test the battery, alternator, and related systems instead of just guessing and throwing parts at the problem. You’ll get a clear recommendation and pricing before we proceed with any repair.
Do you fix all kinds of cars?
My car is overheating. Do you handle cooling system issues?
My A/C went out. Do you work on A/C systems?
In a city like Houston, absolutely. We service most automotive A/C systems, including diagnosing weak or warm air, strange noises, or bad smells from the vents. Our team can check refrigerant levels, look for leaks, and test components like the compressor and fans. After diagnosis, you’ll get options and pricing so you can decide how you want to proceed.
I drive an electric vehicle. Do you work on or diagnose EVs?
Other shops gave me an estimate over the phone. Why do you need me to bring my car in before giving me a price?
Over-the-phone estimates never help anyone when it comes to car repair. Every vehicle’s condition is different, even if the symptoms sound similar. We consider it our professional obligation to inspect your car in person so we can give an honest and accurate estimate, and avoid surprise costs later. This approach protects you from under or over-quoted jobs that grow in price, and helps us stand behind our work with confidence.
I’m thinking about buying a used car but I want to have an honest mechanic tell me if there’s anything wrong with it. Is that something you can do?
Pricing, Payment, And Payment Plans
I can’t afford to pay the full price upfront. Do you offer financing?
Yes, we offer interest-free payment plan options so you can get the work done now and pay over time. Approval is usually quick, and our team can walk you through the application process in just a few minutes. We’ll also prioritize repairs so you understand what’s truly necessary for safety versus what can be scheduled later.
I have my own parts. How much is just labor?
We DO NOT accept customer provided parts. We can’t control the quality or warranty of outside parts, and we don’t offer the same warranty on parts and repairs using customer supplied components. Labor pricing depends on the specific job, as well as the make and model of your vehicle; we’ll inspect the vehicle at no cost to you and confirm exact parts and labor costs before you commit to us.
How much is an oil change, and how long does it take?
Oil change pricing depends on your vehicle type and whether it uses conventional, synthetic blend, or full synthetic oil. Once scheduled, most oil changes are completed within about an hour under normal shop conditions. We’ll confirm the price and time frame when you book your appointment so there are no surprises.
I’m a veteran. Do you offer military discounts?
We appreciate military service and can offer discounts for veterans on certain services. Ask our team when you schedule or check in, present your valid military identification, and we’ll let you know what’s currently available and how it applies to your visit.
Do I have to pay upfront before you fix my car?
No. You do NOT have to pay for the full repair before work begins, but we do require signed authorization on the estimate we provide before we start. Payment is typically due when the vehicle is picked up. For larger repairs, we can discuss interest-free payment plan options or staged repairs to help fit your budget.
I have my own parts. Can you install them and just charge labor?
We do not accept customer-provided parts under any circumstance. We can’t warranty parts we didn’t source, and in most cases, customer-purchased parts fail to meet our quality standards or car manufacturer requirements. The best approach is to let us inspect the car, list the necessary repair(s), quote the parts and labor, and then work with advising you on the safest, most cost-effective option.
I took my car to a shop to get looked at and they were asking for (insert price here). Can you provide a second opinion?
Absolutely. We pride ourselves on being transparent with our customers, both in terms of service required and prices associated. In some cases, we may even be able to match or beat a competitor’s price by working with you on what your budget allows for a repair. All we ask is that you give us the same privilege you gave the first shop by bringing your car in and allow us to expertly and accurately tell you what’s needed. We cannot provide estimates based on another shop or individual’s assessment of your vehicle.
Convenience, Logistics, And Location
My car is broken down. Do you offer towing?
We partner with local towing providers and can help you get your vehicle brought directly to our shop. If you’re stranded, call us and we’ll either coordinate a tow or connect you with a trusted towing company. Once the vehicle arrives, we’ll prioritize an initial evaluation so you’re not left waiting without information.

What convenience services do you offer?
Can I drop my car off after hours?
